Column capitals and bases are the finishing pieces at the top and bottom of a column or pilaster. A capital crowns the shaft and carries the eye up to the beam or soffit; a base anchors the column visually to the porch deck, step or wall. Mouldex capitals and bases have a lightweight, moisture-inert foam core with a hard cementitious coating, so they will not rot, split or attract insects the way wood trim does at the wet ends of a column.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are column capitals and bases structural?
No. Capitals and bases are decorative finishing pieces. The structural post or column inside carries all loads; the capital and base finish the top and bottom of the column wrap or pilaster.
Will they match my column wraps or pilasters?
Yes. Each capital and base is sized to pair with our column wraps and pilasters. Tell us which wrap or pilaster you are using and we will confirm the right match.
Do capitals and bases need to be painted?
Yes. Like all Mouldex mouldings, they are primed and then painted after installation so they match the rest of the column and facade.
Can you make a custom capital or base?
Yes. Send us a drawing, photo or sample of an existing capital or base and we can replicate it, which is ideal for restoration projects.
