Which Foamcore Mouldings Meet Moisture Resistant Specs?
Core, coating and mesh specifications, test methods and real numbers for specifiers.
When a specification calls for moisture-resistant trim, the questions are practical: what is the core made of, how is it protected, how much water does the finished moulding absorb, and how is that tested? This guide answers those questions for factory-coated foamcore mouldings (also called cement-coated foam trim or foam molding), with Mouldex's actual specifications, for architects, builders and contractors on residential, commercial and hospitality projects.
At a glance: Mouldex mouldings are moisture-inert, with an EPS core made to ASTM C578 (Type I for exterior, Type II for interior). Exterior mouldings have a polymer-modified cementitious coating approximately 3/16 inch thick, reinforced with alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh; as a coated assembly, they absorb under 1 to 2% water and have a vapor permeance of 1 to 3 perms. Interior mouldings have an authentic plaster finish, with mesh available on request for certain applications. Fire-rated options are available on request with a Class A fire rating (flame spread 25, smoke developed 110) that helps meet ASTM E-84 and UL 263.

What Makes Foamcore Mouldings Moisture-Inert?
Moisture resistance in architectural mouldings covers several properties: water absorption, vapor permeance, dimensional stability, freeze-thaw durability and resistance to rot. Factory-coated foamcore mouldings achieve them as a system, with each layer playing a part.
The EPS core
- Closed-cell expanded polystyrene resists water absorption and limits moisture uptake from humidity.
- It's made to ASTM C578: Type I for exterior mouldings and Type II for interior mouldings.
- The core is moisture-inert: it won't rot or swell.
- It's lightweight: cement-coated foamcore weighs roughly one-tenth as much as precast concrete and is about 50% lighter than wood.
The exterior coating
- A polymer-modified cementitious coating is the main barrier against moisture.
- It's factory-applied at a controlled thickness of approximately 3/16 inch, and fully encapsulates the foam: front, back and edges.
- Alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh is embedded in the exterior coating to resist cracking and impact.
- Full coverage matters: incomplete edges and backs are a common failure point in field-coated products.
Exterior and Interior Applications
Exterior mouldings
Exterior cornices, window trim, window sills, door surrounds and band moldings face the toughest conditions: rain, humidity, UV and freeze-thaw cycling. Cement-encapsulated, mesh-reinforced EPS cores stand up to them without rotting, a major advantage over wood. Near-zero joint expansion keeps seams tight as temperatures and humidity change, which limits water getting in at joints.
Interior mouldings
Interior plaster crown mouldings, light coves and coffered ceiling beams use the same moisture-inert EPS core with an authentic plaster finish, with mesh reinforcement available on request for certain applications. In everyday interiors, including hotel corridors and suites, restaurants and offices, they avoid the swelling and warping that wood and MDF trim can suffer in changing humidity.
Moisture Testing Standards
When comparing products, ask for results against recognized standards:
- ASTM C578: the standard for rigid EPS insulation, including density classes and water absorption limits by type.
- ASTM C272: water absorption of core materials by 24-hour immersion.
- ASTM E96: water vapor transmission (permeance).
- ASTM D570: water absorption of plastics and coatings.
- ASTM E84: surface burning characteristics, so moisture performance doesn't come at the expense of fire requirements.
How Materials Compare on Moisture
| Property | Factory-coated foamcore (Mouldex exterior) | Field-coated foam | Wood / MDF | PVC | Fiber cement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Water absorption | Under 1 to 2% (coated assembly) | Varies with coating quality | High; swells when wet | Very low | Absorbs water unless sealed |
| Rot | Won't rot | Core won't rot; coating can fail | Rots without upkeep | Won't rot | Resists rot |
| Joint movement | Near-zero joint expansion | Varies | Moves with moisture | High thermal expansion | Low |
| Weight | Light | Light | Moderate to heavy | Moderate | Heavy |
| Installation | Adhesive, with mechanical fasteners where required | Labour-intensive field coating | Mechanical fasteners | Fasteners or adhesive | Heavy; fasteners |

Common Moisture Problems These Mouldings Address
Rot and decay
- The moisture-inert core won't rot, swell or warp in humid conditions.
- Near-zero joint expansion keeps joints closed, limiting water infiltration.
- Continuous cement-coated band moldings can bridge floor lines without rot-prone joints.
Installation-related moisture problems
- Adhesive installation, with mechanical fasteners only where the guidelines require them, limits punctures through the coating.
- Pieces are light enough to install with minimal equipment, and cut with standard woodworking tools.
- The tough outer shell resists dents, as on large profiles like the Norton 18-inch exterior cornice and the Portland.
- Detail flashing, slope and sealant so water drains away; the mouldings aren't designed for permanent immersion.
Frequently Asked Questions
What moisture performance do Mouldex mouldings achieve?
As a coated assembly, Mouldex exterior mouldings have water absorption under 1 to 2% and vapor permeance of 1 to 3 perms. The EPS core is made to ASTM C578: Type I for exterior mouldings and Type II for interior mouldings, whose standard water absorption limits are 4% and 3% by volume. The mouldings are moisture-inert and won't rot.
Do all Mouldex mouldings have fiberglass mesh?
Exterior mouldings are reinforced with alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh (2.6 oz/yd², 0.015 inch thick) embedded in the cementitious coating. For interior mouldings, mesh is available on request for certain applications.
Can foamcore mouldings be used in direct contact with water?
They're designed for weather-exposed and humid applications, not permanent immersion. Like any exterior trim, they should be detailed so water drains away rather than standing against them.
Do foamcore mouldings need to be primed before painting?
Yes. Exterior mouldings arrive in a uniform cement-gray finish and interior mouldings in a matte plaster-white finish. Both need primer, followed by a quality exterior acrylic latex paint outside or a premium interior latex paint inside.
Are fire-rated mouldings available?
Fire-rated options are available on request with a Class A fire rating (flame spread 25, smoke developed 110) that helps meet ASTM E-84 and UL 263.
How are cement-coated foamcore mouldings made?
An EPS core is CNC-cut to the profile, then factory-coated with a polymer-modified cementitious coating approximately 3/16 inch thick, reinforced with alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh, under controlled conditions. The process was featured on The Discovery Channel's How It's Made.
