The 5th Category:
Composite Foamcore
Mouldings vs.
Traditional Materials

Banner Image

For decades, exterior and interior moldings has been limited to four traditional building material categories:

Wood/MDFPVCPolyurethane, and Pre-cast Concrete. Each comes with a documented failure point, from the thermal expansion of Azek and Versatex to the extreme structural weight and fragility of Pre-cast masonry.

Mouldex Composites introduces the superior 5th Category: Cement and plaster coated foamcore Composites.

Engineered for Structural Synergy, our monolithic systems provide the prestigious look and feel of stone and plaster but at 90% less weight. Our flexible engineering allows the system to shift with your structure’s natural movement, eliminating the joint separation, rot, and structural liabilities of 20th-century materials.

The Material Science Dilemma in Architectural Design

Standard architectural mouldings are built to a price point, not a performance standard.

Exterior Failure

  • VS. PVC (Azek/Royal) – Thermal Expansion Failure: PVC has a high coefficient of linear thermal expansion, causing long boards to grow and shrink significantly with annual temperature swings. Mouldex uses an inert core that eliminates unsightly gaps and buckling.

  • VS. Polyurethane (Fypon) – Impact & Fire Liability: High-density polyurethane is brittle and lacks the "rock-hard" protection of masonry. Mouldex's polymer-modified cement coating provides superior impact resistance and an authentic masonry texture.

  • VS. Pre-Cast & Fiber Cement – Structural Load Issues: Pre-cast concrete is extremely heavy and requires cranes or mechanical wall ties. Mouldex is 90% lighter, allowing for one-person adhesive installation on any wall facade without structural reinforcement.

Interior Failure

  • VS. MDF (Metrie/Alexandria) – Moisture Swelling: MDF is highly susceptible to humidity and water exposure, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, leading to warping and disintegration. Mouldex Hybrid Plaster is 100% moisture-inert and will never swell or crack.

  • VS. Synthetics (Ekena/Orac) – The "Plastic" Look: Light, molded plastic alternatives often look "cheap" and suffer from "Light Bleed" when used with integrated LEDs. Our Hybrid Plaster provides a High Opacity, genuine smooth plaster finish.

  • VS. Traditional Plaster – Fragility & Week-Long Lead Times: Conventional plaster casting is fragile, heavy, and can take 30–60 days to fully dry before painting. Mouldex is crack-resistant and arrives ready to install and finish in a single day.

The Discovery Channel's
How It's Made

Beyond Traditional Manufacturing

Our unique manufacturing workflow, integrating CNC-precision cutting with our exclusive polymer-modified cement and hybrid plaster coatings, was selected for a featured segment on Discovery Channel’s "How It’s Made".

This serves as a technical benchmark for our process, verifying how we achieve a level of dimensional stability, impact resistance, and sharp architectural detail that traditional "off-the-shelf" alternatives cannot replicate.

Total Architectural Customization Options: Precision to 1/16"

Stop Settling for
"Off-the-Shelf" Limits

You shouldn't have to compromise your design because of a limited catalog or what’s available at a big-box store. While our competitors force choosing from fixed, pre-made options, Mouldex gives you full ability to customize the shape & size of any profile. Whether you are working on a large exterior crown or an intricate interior crown, we can produce your design with precision right down to 1/16".

Exact Replication
& Bespoke Design

Our facility is engineered to bring your specific ideas to life. You don't need a finished CAD file to get started; we can replicate existing profiles, modify existing profiles or build entirely new designs from almost any source:

Physical Samples or Digital/CAD Files or Hand Sketches

Custom Results in Days,
Not Months

Customization usually implies a long, expensive wait. While traditional custom masonry or wood millwork can take months to deliver, our CNC-driven manufacturing is built for speed. We move from your design approval to a completed custom profile in an average of 10 to 14 days, keeping your project on schedule without sacrificing your design intent.

Quick & Efficent Installtion

Efficiency is engineered into every Mouldex profile. Watch our step-by-step guides to see how our lightweight composite systems eliminate the need for heavy machinery and complex structural ties, allowing for rapid-track installation on any project.

Universal Compatibility for Any Facade

One of the most significant advantages of our composite system is its versatility. Whether you are working on a modern New Build, a high-end Renovation, or a sensitive Historical Restoration, Mouldex is engineered to bond seamlessly to virtually any wall facade.

Installation Options

Our lightweight profiles eliminate the need for the heavy structural reinforcement required by masonry. You can install our systems with confidence over:

  • Stucco & EIFS Systems
  • Brick & Stone (Full Bed & Veneer)
  • ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms)
  • CMU & Poured Concrete
  • Modern Siding Substrates
  • Drywall

Finishing Options

Our mouldings are engineered in a controlled facility, the final aesthetic is perfected on your job site. This gives you total control over the finished look of the project.

  • Precision Wood Mimicry: When our mouldings are finished on-site with a high-quality exterior latex paint, the combination of our fine, smooth coating and sharp CNC-detailed edges creates a look that is indistinguishable from premium wood. You get the elite aesthetic of custom millwork with none of the warping, splitting, or decay.

  • Textured Masonry Aesthetics: For projects requiring a heavy stone appearance, our surfaces can be finished with textured coatings or sands to mimic the look and feel of solid limestone or pre-cast concrete.

MX. CURATED. Architectural Systems, Not Individual Parts

Eliminate the Guesswork with Expertly Chosen Architectural Systems

Most suppliers provide a massive catalog of individual parts and leave the architectural heavy lifting to you. The challenge isn't finding a supplier; it’s the frustration of trying to piece together a cohesive look from hundreds of random SKUs. When the proportions of a window sill don't match the scale of the crown, the entire "rhythm" of the building feels off.

The System Advantage

We developed MX. CURATED. to make it easier for our clients to achieve a prestigious, high-end look without the design friction. Instead of making you hunt through a catalog of parts, we provide professionally matched Architectural Systems. Each collection is a curated set of Trim, Sill, Band, and Crown specifically engineered to work in synergy.

Cohesive Elevations in One Decision

By selecting an MX. CURATED. system, you ensure that every horizontal and vertical element on your building is in perfect scale. Whether you are aiming for a sharp modern aesthetic or a traditional masonry feel, our "System Logic" guarantees consistent shadow lines and a unified, monolithic finish across the entire elevation. You get the right look, the first time, without guesswork.
